NAS (Network attached storage) is file level data storage that is connected to a computer network that provides data access to different types of computers. Generally, business environment people use these types of independent file servers. NAS servers contain one or more hard drives, which are arranged into logical, redundant storage containers such as RAID arrays. This provides access to files using network sharing protocols such as NFS (Network file system), SMB (server Message Block), or AFP (Apple Filling Protocol). Normally, these NAS file servers maintain one or more internal servers, preconfigured disk capacity and usually a stripped-down or special operating system. Usually, NAS servers are connected via Ethernet to the LAN where disk space is provided as file servers. These servers are specially designed for file sharing. The clients those are located at other end of the WAN have no alternative to correspond over same IP. Extra functions like snapshots, remote mirroring and backup are provided with large NAS servers. NAS operating systems can be optimized better than general operating systems. NAS servers can operate easily than file servers on comparable hardware that are based on generic operating system. The functions can be removed easily that are not necessary for NAS file servers. NAS servers are economical as its maintenance cost is low.
